Bradley Court Introduces Much-Needed Behavioral Health Services in San Diego County

| March 5, 2022 | 0 Comments

Bradley Court, a skilled nursing facility belonging to Generations Healthcare, is now certified to treat clients who have both psychiatric and medical diagnoses. With that certification, half of the beds in the facility are dedicated to those whose chronic mental illness makes it prohibitive for them to be admitted to a standard skilled nursing facility.

“When patients discharging from the hospital have mental health diagnoses, it can be very difficult to get them into a skilled nursing facility that is equipped to give the necessary behavioral health care,” said Jacob Schlottman, administrator of Bradley Court. “Bradley Court’s transition to a behavioral health facility will help fill that gap in the San Diego area.”

The special treatment program provides a safe and appropriate place to help patients who have just completed treatment in an acute setting. The goal of the program is to prepare patients to return to the community or to a lower level of care.

“We believe that individuals with psychiatric diagnoses can live successful lives when given the right support and education, and that’s just what Bradley Court aims to provide,” Schlottman said.

Some of the services offered by the special treatment program include the following:

  • Behavior adjustment
  • Self-help skills
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Prevocational preparation
  • Prerelease planning

To help deliver these services, the program employs dedicated mental health professionals, and the medical staff receive special behavioral health training. Many of the staff members at Bradley Court have been with the facility for years, from nursing assistants to directors of nursing, which is unique in a skilled nursing facility.

“The staff really care a lot about patient care and also about the bigger picture,” Schlottman said. “They want to see people do well, and they go the extra mile to provide excellent care—and that shows in how patients recover. Their dedication to Bradley and to the residents has created a homelike, family atmosphere.”

To prepare for the certification, the two-building facility completed safety upgrades and added amenities. Both buildings were gated, and the outdoor walkways were redone. Additionally, picnic tables, seating areas and landscaping were added so that residents could better enjoy the temperate San Diego weather.
