New Expressions Music at 4434 30th Street in San Diego presents a series of fiddle and guitar workshops on August 6th and August 27th for beginners and intermediate players, and at a reasonable cost of $30.  Anyone who has ever considered learning the fiddle, or fiddlers who want to improve their tone and technique should take one or both classes with local fiddle and mandolin phenomenon John Mailander.  He’s taking time off from his studies at Berklee School of music to provide a day of fiddle instruction and meet with his friends from the San Diego music community.  The first class is for the Beginning/Lower intermediate groups and runs from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm on Saturday, August 6th . You’ll learn technique fundamentals, including double-stops and rhythmic chopping, how to participate in a Bluegrass jam, and a few new tunes for you to add to your repertoire.  The second class is for Intermediate/Advanced students and runs from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm.  This class will cover more advanced techniques, essential music theory and improvisation, as well as combining all your techniques for a more pleasing performance.

On Saturday, August 27th, guitar wizard David Grier makes his annual pilgrimage to San Diego for an eagerly awaited 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. workshop, followed by a concert at 7:00 pm. Those who have attended his workshops previously know that they emerge as much better players regardless of their skill level at the outset. A David Grier concert is not to be missed, with a bevy of guitar pyrotechnics as well as some great traditional guitar picking. To attend one or both events is a must!  Tickets for the David Grier workshop and concert are $50 and can be reserved by calling (619)280-9035.  Advanced seats for the concert are discounted to $18.00, and are $20.00 at the door if you don’t attend the workshop.
