Father Joe’s Villages Unfurls Banner Atop San Diego’s Soon-To-Be Newest and Largest Affordable Housing Building
This past April, local nonprofit leaders and homeless advocates in downtown San Diego wore face masks and climbed to the roof of the Father Joe’s Villages Paul Mirabile Center to watch as the local nonprofit unfurls a 40-foot “Hope Lives Here” banner from the top the organization’s latest affordable housing community, Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa. Upon completion in February 2022, this 14-story building will bring 407 affordable housing units to downtown San Diego.
The Hope Lives Here banner ceremony celebrated the topping off of the building, a key milestone in the construction timeline. Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages, invoked a prayer and blessing for the installation of the Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa Hope Lives Here banner to celebrate this important milestone in the development of the new affordable housing complex. Also present was Ed Witt, Enhance La Jolla president, Father Joe’s Villages board member and honorary chair of the Father Joe’s Villages Hope Lives Here Campaign.
San Diego has the fourth largest homeless population in the nation. With an increasing number of individuals and families spending more than half of their income on housing, many are only a few paychecks away from becoming homeless. By creating affordable housing units for people overcoming homelessness, Father Joe’s Villages addresses this massive issue plaguing San Diego communities and helps struggling neighbors leave homelessness behind for good.
After compiling comprehensive funding sources, including a $10 million gift from Terrance and Barbara Caster, Father Joe’s Villages will continue to transform underused lots such as the one on Commercial Street and 14th Street into these long-term housing developments.
