Old Town San Diego Parade and Re-Enactment Honors the Mormon Battalion
The Annual Mormon Battalion Parade & Community event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, January 27 in Old Town San Diego. This event brings together members of the community to celebrate the history and contributions of the Mormon Battalion, a group of approximately 500 men who served in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. Historic reenactors will line up for inspection from their commanding officer.
“We are thrilled to host this annual event honoring the Mormon Battalion,” said Brent Top, the event’s coordinator and the president of the Mormon Battalion Historic Site. “It is a great opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the history and contributions of these brave soldiers.”
The parade is the main attraction of the event. Historic reenactors in military formation paraded around the Plaza de las Armas concluding in front of the main stage. After a rousing salute the 177th Annual Commemoration will officially began. The parade is followed by welcoming speeches from the events’ organizers and special guests.
The event also includes activities for kids, such as cattle wrangling, brick-making, and pioneer doll-making, which will keep them entertained throughout the day. A Dutch oven cook-off is also planned. The event is free and open to the public.
