Thanks to the greeting card industry and our overall joy for celebrating, this month is filled with days of observances starting with April Fools’ Day on the first. Do you have a memory of a prank you pulled or one that was pulled on you? I enjoy hearing about pranks even though I have never been one to play a prank on April Fools’ Day, and I was pretty hard to prank.
Nowadays, April celebrations and observances include mani-pedis, burritos and acai bowls, grilled cheese, baked ham, peach cobbler, eggs benedict, shrimp scampi, deep dish pizza, and oatmeal cookies, beer and libraries and librarians. All of which you may easily find the ingredients to make, buy ready-made, or enjoy by appointment in Mission Hills.
On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will trace a narrow path across 13 States. Although San Diego is not directly in the path of totality, here in San Diego, we will be able to see about 60 to 65 percent of the eclipse starting at 10:03 a.m. The eclipse will peak at 11:11 a.m., with the entire event ending by 12:23 p.m. Watchers share that San Diego will be the best place in all of California to view the April 8 eclipse. The next solar eclipse, visible locally, will happen on August 23, 2044. Note to self: On 4/8 @ 11:11 a.m. take outdoor break.
Since the first Earth Day observation in 1970, more than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day events each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. In San Diego, Earth Day will be celebrated on Saturday April 20. Locally events will feature eco-friendly food, product and service vendors as well as environmental, conservation and animal rescue groups, speakers, music and activities for kids. San Diego’s Earth Day is a family-friendly and dog-friendly event.
And, speaking of dogs, April celebrations also include Guide Dogs, Lost Dogs Awareness, Adopt a Shelter Pet, Hug Your Dog, Pet Day, Pet Parents and Kids and Pets Day. At US Bank Mission Hills, we appreciate customers who are regularly accompanied by their four-legged family, so we always have dog treats on-hand. One of my favorite pups trots inside, jumps on a chair, then onto the counter and stares at the treats until he is given one. On a walk with your buddy? Please stop by.
Embracing the tenets of Earth Day, two traditions continue in Mission Hills. The One Mission Realty Annual Shredding Event will be taking place on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Hawk Street at Fort Stockton Drive. For more information, visit OneMissionRealty.com/shred. Maureen and Antoinette at COMPASS will celebrate the twenty-fifth-year of the Mission Hills Community Garage Sale. They will host the 2024 sale on Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. until noon. If you want to host a garage sale, stop in at 1621 West Washington for a sign-up card.
Interested in Passover? Passover begins at sundown on April 22 and continues through nightfall on April 29. Traditionally, the Passover meal known as Seder, is held on the first two nights of Passover; this year on April 22 and 23. A Seder requires a formal structure, with songs and readings and the presence of the ‘Seder plate’. The Seder plate contains six different foods: matzo, a green vegetable, a lamb shank bone and haroset, which is a mixture of apples and cinnamon, bitter herbs and an egg. This Jewish holiday is internationally celebrated to commemorate the historic exodus from slavery in Egypt. A “movable feast”, the dates for Passover vary from year to year. If you are a Seder host, please remember preparations are available in Mission Hills at Vons and Lazy Acres with table setting extras at Lewis+Fay Collective, Mission Gallery and, likely, a few more places.
