Farewell Summer

Let the learning begin, the new school year is upon us.  Here in Mission Hills, Grant K8 began its new academic year on August 12 and St Vincent School’s first day of classes was on August 20, while Francis Parker School started on September 3.   With these excellent schools in our neighborhood, we have many parents who have chosen to commute from outside of Mission Hills in order for their children to receive a great education.  Some of these parent drivers use various routes through our residential and business neighborhoods when delivering their children to school in the morning and when picking them up in the afternoon. Please remember to slow down even if you are running behand, stop at all stop signs, and share the road with bicycles.

Most importantly, let’s keep our children, pedestrians, cyclists, and pets safe as they are using our roadways. As pedestrians and cyclists, we also need to be mindful of school delivery and pick-up focused drivers and please cross streets at crosswalks and marked intersections.  Being safe is more important than being in the right. We all lead such busy lives in this high-tech world, let’s be safe out there this school year.

For those already missing their college bound family members, care packages are a great way to share the love and add a memory from home.  To make things easy, visit Mail Station at 325 West Washington, where Lancelot Knight and his crew will take care of all your mailing needs; boxes, tape, and numerous options for getting the goods safely delivered to its destination.

September marks the neighborhood’s farewell to summer. With Labor Day weekend kicking off on Friday August 30, it is the perfect time to relax and unwind with friends and family and enjoy the seasonal transition through Monday.  Perhaps you’ll entertain and grill something in the backyard or meet friends at one of our Mission Hills restaurants. This weekend tourists depart, and we reclaim our spaces and places.

From 8:30 a.m. to 11:30, September 21, a Mission Hills Neighborhood clean-up is planned. If you are interested in taking part, wear your hat and gloves and join us in the Safdie Rabines’ parking lot, just west of Meshuggah Shack. Refreshments and snacks will be provided for volunteers. The clean-up will focus on two areas:

1) A rough square bounded by Dove Street, University Avenue, Ibis Street and the canyon rim to the north; and 2) West Washington Street from India Street to Dove Street.  Depending on turnout, more areas may be added.

This effort is part of I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) twice yearly effort to keep neighborhoods, canyons and beaches free of trash.  In Mission Hills the work is being coordinated by John Bertsch, realtor, Coldwell Banker West and ILACSD’s Mission Hills Neighborhood captain. If you have any questions, reach out to John at 619-518-5421.

The 12th Annual Taste of Mission Hills is right around the corner and taking place on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.  This foodie celebration showcases our neighborhood’s delectable and diverse culinary offerings. In addition to taste being the most delicious fundraiser of the year, it helps promote the BID’s work throughout the year. US Bank, Mission Hills branch at 610 West Washington Street, is this year’s Title Sponsor. It is because of their generous donation that we are able to grow the event while offering affordable ticket prices of $45 for advance purchase tickets.

This year, the first day of fall is September 22, which kicks off the ticket selling season for the 12th Annual Taste of Mission Hills. Taste of Mission Hills is our hallmark event which provides resources for us to carry out the work of promoting our businesses as a regional destination, improving the design elements throughout our business core, and pursuing economic development opportunities for every business owner the rest of the year. Colorful banners will be installed and flying on lamp posts throughout Mission Hills beginning as a reminder to buy tickets to this delicious event.

We are happy to announce that tickets to the 12th Annual Taste of Mission Hills will again include three “taste” trolleys thanks to the generous sponsorship from Hailey and Merritte Powellat La Puerta Mission Hills, John Ealy at Harley Gray Kitchen&Bar and Marea RiedleratA Designed Space. The trolleys will deliver tasters to within steps of all participating taste venues covering the more than five-mile taste route from West Lewis Street to Fort Stockton Drive to Goldfinch Street and West Washington Street, and onto Reynard Way and India Street. The Tighten-Ups band will provide live music and photographer Rosanna Barr will capture the special evening.

The names, and addresses for each participating venue will be listed on posters displayed in Mission Hills’ shops. Advance purchase tickets are $45 each. Only 600 tickets will be sold, stay tuned to our website and social to know when tickets go on sale and then buy your tickets early at one of the following locations: All American Tailor, 325 West Washington Street; US Bank, Mission Hills Branch at 610 West Washington Street; and The Keratin Shop, 902 West University Avenue Street. Pop-up ticket sales will occur in the neighborhood and will be announced on Mission Hills BID’s social. The BID is grateful for the generosity of this year’s venue participants offering “tastes” and to the generous sponsors who support our mission to promote Mission Hills’ neighborhood of businesses.

See you in the neighborhood!
