Mission Hills Heritage Presents “Home Tour Weekend” ~ Spanish Architectural Styles of Mission Hills

| August 31, 2025 | 0 Comments

Mission Hills Heritage (MHH) is beyond pleased to present its 18th Annual Historic Home Tour, featuring for the first time ever a gala soiree the evening before the tour to kick off the festivities, to be held on Friday and Saturday, September 26 and 27, respectively. This year’s theme is Spanish Architectural Styles of Mission Hills, which has not been featured on the home tour collectively as a style in over 10 years, and the gala event, “A Night in España,” appropriately follows suit.

“We really wanted to bring our members and the community a special event, beyond our typical wine and cheese party, something that feels magical,” says gala steering committee and board member Jennifer Machian.

To make this fundraiser a reality, MHH has partnered with Lewis & Fay, a beloved gourmet grocery and specialty gift shop on West Lewis Street, known for their culinary centered experiences with locally inspired gatherings. MHH is also thrilled to welcome the chef collective from Oliver & Rose—featuring Adriana Sanchez, Isabel Cruz, and Tami Ratliffe—who will bring their talents to create a truly one-of-a-kind Spanish themed evening.

A Night in España will be hosted at the Thomas & Katherine Carter/Lincoln Rogers House, an elegant circa 1927 Spanish Eclectic home, located in the Randolph Terrace area of Mission Hills. The evening will include a limited exclusive viewing of the home (which is not on the Saturday home tour), signature cocktails and Spanish wines, live Spanish guitar music, Spanish-inspired hors d’oeuvres and a charcuterie spread, and a finely curated silent auction offering artisanal goods, artwork, and memorable experiences.

The next day, tour guests will embark on a self-paced (driving or walking) docent-led tour through a charming collection of Spanish-style homes. Designed by Master Builders like Pear Pearson and William Wahrenberger and Master Architect Richard Requa, these homes will embody the iconic Spanish architectural styles that transformed Mission Hills’ neighborhoods in the 1920s.  Spanish-styled homes in the region, inspired by the visionary designs of Bertram Goodhue and Carleton Winslow from the 1915 San Diego Exposition, often showcase white-washed stucco exteriors, graceful low-pitched tile roofs, intricate ironwork, colorful tiled interiors, and lush tropical gardens—all elements guests can expect to experience on the tour.

Expect a coffee truck and pop-up pastry cart by Sissy’s Sourdough. Plus, tour-goers are encouraged to end their tour at Mission Hills Financial on West Lewis Street, a fine example of Prairie style architecture where they can find refreshments and a reprieve from walking!

The annual home tour is MHH’s biggest fundraiser of the year.  Asked why MHH has added to the home tour with a gala fundraiser, Rob Jassoy, MHH president, says, “Many changes in our neighborhoods are beyond our control. However, our Board has committed to securing national historic recognition for Mission Hills, offering some protections. With about 10 potential districts, the cost will far exceed our usual fundraising over the next few years.”

Whatever the fundraising result, the gala is certainly expected to be an unforgettable evening of sensory delights, libations, and cheer.
