Be Part of Old Town History: The Heritage Walk Offers a Lasting Legacy

There are few places in California where history feels as alive and present as it does in Old Town. Known as the birthplace of California, this cherished district has long been a gathering place for stories, celebrations, and community. Now, there is a new and meaningful way to become a permanent part of that history the Old Town San Diego Heritage Walk.
Already underway along the east side of San Diego Avenue, just in front of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Heritage Walk is more than a beautiful addition to Old Town it is a heartfelt tribute to the people and stories that make this community so special. Each engraved brick represents a memory, a milestone, or a legacy, creating a pathway that will be walked by generations to come.
The Heritage Walk is a fundraising initiative of the Historic Old Town Community Foundation, with proceeds supporting preservation efforts and community enhancements throughout Old Town. Currently, funds raised are going toward the development of the Old Town Arch at the corner of Twiggs Street and San Diego Avenue an exciting project that will serve as a welcoming gateway to this historic district.
What makes the Heritage Walk so unique is the deeply personal nature of each brick. Individuals, families, and businesses are invited to purchase and customize their own engraved brick, creating a lasting tribute in a place that holds meaning for so many.
“It’s incredible to see how people are choosing to celebrate their connection to Old Town,” says Fred Grand, President of the Old Town Chamber of Commerce and Historic Old Town Community Foundation. “We’ve heard stories of couples commemorating their first date here, families honoring loved ones, and even celebrations of life. It truly speaks to how special this place is.”
Whether it’s a tribute to a loved one, a recognition of your family name, or a way to showcase your business, the Heritage Walk offers a timeless opportunity to leave your mark iin one of California’s most historic settings. Imagine visiting Old Town and seeing your name, your story, or your memory permanently etched into the path—an enduring connection to a place that continues to inspire.
There are two brick options available: 4” x 8” bricks for $300 and 8” x 8” bricks for $500 Each brick can be personalized with custom text and optional artwork. When ordering, you can design your brick directly online, choosing from available graphics and entering your message. For example, a standard 4” x 8” brick allows for three lines of up to 18 characters each, while graphic options adjust the layout slightly. Larger 8” x 8” bricks allow for even more space to tell your story.
For those who would like a keepsake, replica bricks are also available allowing you to have one installed on the Heritage Walk while keeping a matching version at home.
The next unveiling and laying of bricks is expected to take place around the Fourth of July, making now the perfect time to secure your place in this historic project. Ordering soon ensures your brick will be included in the upcoming installation.
