Dan McClellan Talks San Diego Sports with Sockers GM Sean Bowers
San Diego, CA – Sports Journalist Dan McClellan sits down with San Diego Sockers General Manager Sean Bowers to talk indoor soccer and sports in San Diego in an interview for Presidio Sentinel. A former CBS Sports Rapid Reporter, McClellan was involved in the 2016 petition drive to build a downtown stadium and convention center and had the opportunity to debate the merits of Proposition C. Unfortunately, the proposition failed to pass, and in January 2016 Dean Spanos announced the San Diego Chargers would move to Los Angeles for the 2017 NFL season.
With the loss of the Chargers, many San Diego sports fans feel lost and abandoned. However, an exciting, championship team is as close as the Valley View Casino Center. ‘There’s other great sports teams in San Diego,” says McClellan, “and they’re teams that win championships, like the Sockers.” Currently the San Diego Sockers are challenging the rest of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) as they battle for their 15th championship in the history of the franchise.
Bowers, a former player with the Sockers as well as the U.S. Men’s Futsal National Team, explains that as a former season ticket holder, he, too, is disappointed with the loss of the Chargers. However, as the Sockers’ GM, he sees a new opportunity for his team to reach out to the sports fans of San Diego. “It gives us the opportunity to continue doing the things that we’re in the community, [and] on the field winning championships,” Bowers explains. “We’re the only sports franchise in San Diego that has 14 championships.”
McClellan and Bowers go on to talk about the role of the team in the community and challenge of living up to a history of 14 championships. “The difference between the Sockers and the Padres or the Chargers is, the Padres or the Chargers make the playoffs, that’s a good year for them,” McClellan points out. “The Sockers, you lose the championship game and the year in some ways is a failure.”
