Support Mission Hills Small Business Owners
By Dixie Hall, President Mission Hills BID and DixiePops Owner
The holiday season is upon us — and elections are behind us, finally! The Mission Hills BID elections for directors and officers took place on November 18. I was elected director for three years and president for 2021. As a resident of Mission Hills and business owner of DixiePops in Mission Hills, I look forward to bringing a unique perspective to the BID board. And I look forward to communicating with you each month.
This has been a year we’ll forever remember – and we look forward to better times in the year ahead. But right now we celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa — a joyous time spent with a COVID mandated, smaller group of family and friends. It is also a time for gift-giving to loved ones, a host and hostess, or a gift-exchange among favorite friends and colleagues.
Call me odd, but I love to Christmas shop. I like hunting for the special presents that will be just perfect for the people I love. I get a kick out of imagining how excited they will be when they open it. I thoroughly enjoy shopping for the hostess gifts, the work gifts, the Christmas exchange gifts. I even like to wrap them.
And so, speaking of special presents, I would like to invite you to support our local Mission Hills businesses. Whether you purchase that special gift or a gift card for the recipient to choose something they like, please first consider buying from the wonderful shops, restaurants, wellness and self-care establishments in our neighborhood. Visit West Lewis Street – all aglow with unique gift items. On West Lewis, when you buy a special holiday something for someone, remember to buy something for yourself as well. A to Z indulgences, from one-of-a-kind clothing, to hard-to-find grown-up beverages, abound on West Lewis.
Yes, the most wonderful gifts to be had this holiday season are found right here in our own Mission Hills. For the man (or woman) who has everything, how about a sleek Italian motorcycle from Mission Hills’ very own motorcyclery on India Street? Enjoy a stop at your favorite English tea shop or pub. And, what about adding the tradition of making homemade tamales with prepared masa from India Street? Seafood, gelato, deli sandwiches and Thai food on India Street will energize your holiday shopping experience.
And, spa day can be everyday with locations along West Lewis, Goldfinch and Fort Stockton, onto West Washington and Reynard Way, and westerly to India Street. Rest your weary feet someplace along the way. Schedule a massage. Get your hair styled. Buy a holiday gift or three for friends. During the holidays and throughout the year, there’s plenty of pampering taking place in Mission Hills; so enjoy!
Amidst the holiday decorated leaded glass windows, a word of caution to be alert and remember there are people who are looking for targets —- the unlocked door and the open window or the holiday shopping bag left in plain view. Take an extra minute to remove your belongings from view; and lock doors and windows. It takes just a moment for a thief to swoop in and ruin your day. Also, take care your credit cards are not in full view. Someone next to you can take a photo or lift the card completely.
Indeed, Mission Hills is a Winter Wonderland of small and large shopping treasures. The perfect gift selection awaits you.
Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
