Washington Street Bike Lane Gets Lots of Negative Comments
Over the past month, I reviewed Nextdoor comments from Mission Hills residents and visitors who regularly travel along Washington Street. Their concerns point to a broader problem: this major corridor to and from Mission Hills is being altered without adequate consideration of the effects on the community and the people who rely on it.
One comment, among many, reflects the concern that SANDAG and the City of San Diego have done too little to invite residents and visitors to weigh in on the changes to Washington Street:
“Unbelievable amount of money being spent for a few. I can’t imagine how unsafe it will be going down the Washington hill and how difficult it will be to go up the hill. Streets are a mess, but our leaders spend money on bike lanes. I think the intersection design at India and Washington requires a 2nd look. It is unsafe.”
Beyond the design concerns raised in that comment, delays of up to 30 minutes on Washington Street may push traffic into nearby residential neighborhoods, creating additional safety risks for Mission Hills residents.
