Funani and Amahle Are Enjoying Their Renovated Habitat
It’s with joyful glee that the San Diego Zoo reminds residents to see the adorable faces of their two resident hippos: the 39-year-old Funani (pronounced “foo-nah-nee”) and her four-year-old daughter, Amahle (pronounced “ah-mah-shlay”).
After a months-long renovation, the duo has recently returned to their Hippo Trail habitat. The aquatic ecosystem habitat boasts 110 feet of crystal-clear glass for underwater viewing and features several new enhancements. These include a deck for behind-the-scenes guest opportunities, interactive experiences, storytelling elements, and a “resting rock”. The refurbished habitat also features a state-of-the-art water filtration system capable of filtering the entire pool—up to 210,000 gallons of water—in just one hour.
Visitors can now experience Funani and Amahle up close from the ground level and from above on the new deck. These unique viewing options reflect the hippos’ amphibious nature, living on land and underwater.
