Horses of Tir Na Nog celebrates the Year of the Horse
On Friday, February 27, six new horses arrived at Horses of Tir Na Nog. The horses came from a local rescue that was closing. It was the largest intake of domestic horses in a single day by Horses of Tir Na Nog.
Many of the horses have medical conditions or are older, requiring specialized care. Some of the horses had hooves that hadn’t been trimmed in years. The farrier needed to use a saw to cut through the thick overgrowth. Horses’ hooves should be trimmed every eight weeks.
“It is very special that these horses have arrived at the beginning of the Lunar Year of the Horse,” Amy Pat Rigney, administrator, Horses of Tir Na Nog. “These new residents embody the characteristics ascribed to the horse in the lunar zodiac — hope and determination. They represent the mission of Horses of Tir Na Nog. It is the belief of the sanctuary that all horses deserve a chance to live in peace and safety.”
Horses of Tir Na Nog is the longest-operating equine sanctuary in San Diego County and is currently caring for over 115 equines. Horses of Tir Na Nog is an adoption partner with County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and works in compliance with American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Rescue and Retirement Guidelines.
Horses of Tir Na Nog is a community-supported equine sanctuary that offers a safe-haven to horses with few options remaining, thereby ensuring them a better quality of life.
Horses can be sponsored as a means to provide them with a safe place to live. You can sponsor a “Farrier Day.” Every seven weeks farriers visit the ranch trim hooves and check for lameness. A typically farrier visit costs $1,300. With seven Farrier Days each year, this represents a significant portion of the facilities annual budget. Please consider sponsoring a Farrier Day with a donation of $1,000.
Sponsorships allow Tir Na Nog to provide horses with food and veterinary care. A full sponsorship is $3,000 annually. This level of sponsorship includes both feed sponsorship ($1,000) and veterinary care sponsorships ($2,000, includes farrier care).
Sponsorships can be funded through a one-time gift or monthly/quarterly donations. Tir Na Nog can also help donors set up a fundraising page if they would like to team up with friends and family to sponsor a horse.
