Snow Day for Grizzly Bears at the San Diego Zoo
Scout and Montana, a pair of rescued brother bears, spent the day exploring, wrestling and playing in the fresh powder. Specialized industrial snowblowers blew man-made snow into the habitat to recreate the kind of late-spring conditions grizzlies often experience in the wild.
Scout and Montana were rescued as cubs nearly 20 years ago from an area outside Yellowstone National Park after they and their mother repeatedly found unsecured food in human-occupied areas, creating safety risks for both bears and local communities. Their story serves as an important reminder that properly storing food and securing trash in bear country helps protect both people and wildlife.
The cubs were brought to the San Diego Zoo in 2007 and have been a guest favorite ever since. If you’d like to visit Scout and Montana, the grizzly brothers can be found on Center Street at the San Diego Zoo.
