A Celebration of Ruth Henrick’s Life – A Pillar of the Mission Hills Community

At 3 p.m., Saturday, April 11, Mission Hills United Church of Christ, located at 4044 Lark Street in Mission Hills, will host a celebration of life honoring a long-standing proprietor of the Huddle in Mission Hills, Ruth Henricks. She operated The Huddle since she purchased it from her sister-in-law Terry Pierce in 1986.

Special Delivery, a non-profit that Henrick founded in 1991, focused on patients who often were ostracized in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, it provides meals to medically homebound people living with AIDS, diabetes, cancer and other critical illnesses throughout the San Diego community. The volunteer staff helps to keep overhead low and maintain its strict commitment to serving their clientele. At its height, Special Delivery provided three meals a day to 200 people. In her lifetime, Henricks delivered more than a million meals to chronically ill people.

For years, she led the board of Green Manor, the affordable senior housing complex located in Mission Hills. Henricks also helped plan large neighborhood events, including Mission Hills Music and Arts Festival that used to be held in the heart of Mission Hills over an entire weekend. She also served on other Mission Hills foundation and business boards. The Huddle’s back room has been the site for many community groups that needed a meeting space.

Ruth Henricks died at home surrounded by family on December 31, 2025 at age 81.
