San Diego Superior Court at the Whaley House

From 1868 to 1871, the Whaley House in Old Town San Diego served as the courthouse and seat of San Diego. The County of San Diego rented the courthouse for $65 per month until the highly contested move to “new town” in downtown San Diego.

On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, Presiding Judge Richard S. Whitney held court during the entire day at the Whaley House to recognize Thomas Whaley and the Whaley family, as well as the judges of the era that traveled by horseback from Los Angeles to San Diego.

As a working courthouse for the day, all general orders of the presiding department of the San Diego Superior Court and all local and state rules of court apply to the Whaley House.

The Whaley House, located at 2476 San Diego Avenue, besides being a historic site, is highly regarding for its educational benefits and is visited daily by residents and guests of San Diego.
