19th Annual Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival

San Diego REPertory Theater (San Diego REP) hosts the 19th annual Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival. The festival, rich in culture, talent, and Jewish soul, is organized and directed by Todd Salovey, associate artistic director, San Diego REP.

Festival performances are staged on various venues throughout San Diego County through June 7, 2012. The line-up for the 19th annual Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival includes:

Performed by Teatro Punto y Coma

“El Primero” (in Spanish) Performed by Teatro Punto y Coma. Performances are Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Performances are at the Lyceum Space at San Diego REP. Annual Klezmer Summit with Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi. Strom has spent a lifetime discovering musical treasures from Eastern Europe. Wedding dances to folk songs to theatre songs, the Old World becomes the New World in Strom’s virtuoso hands.

“Common Music in Colliding Cultures”

Join us prior to the Monday, June 4 performance for a free pre-show discussion titled “Common Music in Colliding Cultures” with Yale Strom, Salman Ahmad, Elizabeth Schwartz, Sunny Jain, and Samir Chatterjee. This pre-performance event begins at 6:30 p.m.

The 11th annual Klezmer Summit is Monday, June 4, 2012 at 7:30 p.m., on the Lyceum Stage at San Diego REP. Tickets are $18 per person and may be purchased from the Lyceum Box Office in person, by phone (619) 544-1000, or online at www.sdrep.org.

“The Blessing of a Broken Heart” by Todd Salovey is the true story of a young American mother who moves her family from Maryland to the wilderness of Israel in search of meaning and adventure only to be immersed in the storm of a 3,000 year-old struggle. When a shocking tragedy hits the heart of her family, she embarks on a profound journey of discovery, growing faith and spiritual transcendence that becomes an inspiring story of healing and rebirth. Music and images from the Holy Land add to this touching story of a loving mother who discovers a courage she never knew she possessed.

“Women of Valor,” by Rebecca Myers, Leah Salovey, Todd Salovey, and Ali Viterbi provides live music, vivid images and heartwarming stories are combined to honor six inspirational Jewish women who have made a difference in our lives. This year’s special women include Edith Eva Eger, Claire Ellman, Karen Flexer Friedenberg, Ana Galicot and Julia Stone.

“Women of Valor” is Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyceum Space at San Diego REP.
