San Diego United Communities Stages Press Conference Nov. 22nd to Announce Leaders Joining Forces to Stop Reckless Development
More than 100 people turned out the morning of November 22nd for a press conference and rally hosted by San Diego United Communities, an organization “Calling for City Reform.” The press conference, which was staged at the site of a proposed 141-unit, eight-story Complete Communities apartment complex located at 2935 A Street in Golden Hill, served to announce a unified effort to address what they describe as rampant and “reckless building” practices threatening the city’s character and resources.
?
The community leaders have mobilized residents to join a movement aimed at protecting environmental integrity, community planning, and overall quality of life. ?
?The key goal of the movement is to send a strong, united message to City leadership, and to advocate for stronger oversight and community-focused planning. The group aims to put an end to irresponsible development they say prioritizes profit over people and the environment.
Guest speakers included Margaret Virissimo with Protect Point Loma, event coordinator, who gave opening and closing remarks; Patty Ducey-Brookes of Mission Hills, who addressed the purpose of the event; Eric Law of Protect Point Loma, who talked about the goals of the group; Richard Bailey, who stressed San Diego policies over politics; Geoff Hueter, chair of Neighbors for a Better San Diego; John McNab of Preserve Golden Hill, who gave an update on the Golden Hill lawsuit; Laurie Fisher, AIA, who explained why the City’s approach to housing doesn’t work and offered sensible solutions to providing needed affordable housing; Kimberly Grogan of Protect Point Loma; Scott Case of Middleton, who updated attendees on the Columbia Street Complete Communities project; Ed Moore of Mission Hills, who helped fight the Kettner & Vine 1,000-bed homeless shelter; Danna Givot, vice chair of Neighbors for a Better San Diego who summarized the dismaying outcome of yesterday’s Land Use & Housing Committee meeting to vote on the College Area Community Plan Update; Marha Abraham, District 4 candidate who resides in Encanto; Pam Begeal, who updated guests on her website that tracks all ADU projects throughout San Diego; and Kenny Key, a resident of Emerald Hills who delivered a passionate speech about why residents need to get involved and provide social media content.
