4th Annual “World of Orchids” Returns to San Diego Botanic Garden
San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) has announced the return of its fourth annual spring showcase, World of Orchids, running Saturday, May 4 through Monday, May 27. The exhibition will be staged in the Garden’s state-of-the-art, 8,000 square foot, glass-enclosed facility, the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. World of Orchids is curated by SDBG’s highly awarded Artist-in-Residence, René van Rems, AIFD, who serves as creative director for the exhibition.
“Orchids comprise one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants in the world,” said SDBG President and CEO, Ari Novy, PhD. “With hundreds of species on display, this exhibit includes fantastical and strange orchids that should not be missed.”
Over the course of five weeks, René van Rems will change the orchids on display, allowing visitors to have a different experience each visit. This is van Rems’ fourth year as the creative director for World of Orchids, and he hopes that the displays will “inspire people to look at plants, botanic elements and their environment with renewed awareness.”
The stunning floral designs will feature impressive orchid specimens, locally bred hybrids, and rare species plants displayed in unique and unexpected ways. In addition to the many orchids that typically grow in the Garden’s Conservatory, displays will include plants on loan from private growers belonging to two local groups, the San Diego County Orchid Society and the Palomar Orchid Society, as well as orchids and materials from local businesses. On select days during the exhibition, vendors will also be offering unusual and unique orchids and merchandise for sale. Hands-on classes and workshops focused on orchids will accompany the exhibition and will be added to the website in the coming weeks.
Admission to World of Orchids is free for Members, and an additional $7 for non-members ages 17+. Non-member admission begins at $18 for adults, $10 for children 3 to 17 and are free for ages two and under. Discounted tickets are also available for military, students and seniors ages 60+. General admission includes access to the vendor booths and the rest of the Garden’s 37 acres during the same visit. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made online.
