San Diego Junior Theatre’s Diamond Celebration – 75 Years of Magic

To commemorate 75 years of providing high quality productions and theatre education for San Diego’s youth, San Diego Junior Theatre (SDJT) is planning a special evening at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 12 inside the Casa del Prado Theatre. They will bid a fond farewell to outgoing Artistic Director, Desha Crownover, and welcome their incoming Producing Artistic Director, Joey Price, and celebrating other JT honorees and feature performances by students from JT on Tour and Confetti. Attire is “Summery Chic.” All tickets are available at www.juniortheatre.com.

The Junior Theatre Honors is a tradition designed to recognize Junior Theatre alumni for exemplary lifetime achievement in their careers, professions of community service, as well as non-alumni for their distinguished or extraordinary service to SDJT.

2023 Honorees are Agnes Chu (JT Alumna, president of Condé Nast Entertainment), Jay Heiserman (JT alumnus and guest designer, Emmy Award Winning production designer), David Saville (retired educator and JT volunteer) and Francine Maigue (1981-2022; JT alumna and guest director, district director for former Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.

Tickets for the program are $35. A limited number of $125 tickets include a cocktail reception from 5-7pm on the patio next to the theatre. Reception attendees will enjoy appetizers, signature cocktails, live music and entertainment, and a silent auction.

Since 1948, Junior Theatre’s mission has been able to provide engaging, innovative, high-quality theatre education and productions for children of all cultural heritage, ages, abilities, and levels of interest. Junior Theatre training fosters creativity, imagination and independent thinking which helps a young person face life’s challenges and discover themselves and their place in this world. Students gain confidence, learn leadership, practice teamwork and build a skill set – not only for a theatre stage, but for the larger stage of the real world. Notable alumni include Tony Award-winning Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell, Casey Nicholaw, director/choreographer of such Broadway hits as “Mean Girls,” “The Book of Mormon” and “Something Rotten!”, Agnes Chu, president of Condé Nast Entertainment (and a 2023 JT Honors recipient) and many others who have gone on to success in a variety of fields. Junior Theatre’s motto is “Theatre skills are skills for life!”

Junior Theatre strongly encourages all eligible patrons to be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. Masks inside the theatre are recommended, but not required.
