Nonprofit Launches Monthly Women in Music SD Series
Since 2023, The Music Company (TMC) has worked to strengthen San Diego’s music ecosystem by providing affordable studio space, mentorship, and career-building opportunities for emerging artists and creatives in the music industry. This March, the Pacific Beach nonprofit is marking its third anniversary by launching a new monthly event series with GRRRL Music, titled Women in Music SD, designed to strengthen connections among female music creators in San Diego. The new series will launch with its first monthly event at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 26, and will take place on the fourth Thursday of each month in 2026.
While San Diego produces a wealth of musical talent, the region has historically lacked the professional infrastructure needed to turn that talent into sustainable careers. TMC was founded to help fill that gap by offering professional studio environments and development opportunities for musicians, sound engineers, DJs, videographers, and other industry creatives, allowing artists to grow without leaving the region.
“Too often, talented musicians, producers, and engineers feel they need to leave San Diego to find real career momentum,” said Ted Pawela, executive director of The Music Company. “Our goal is to make sure artists here have access to the kind of professional environment, relationships, and creative opportunities that help careers grow.”
The new Women in Music SD series will feature conversations and collaboration around songwriting, production, live performance, artist development, and navigating today’s music industry.
As a nonprofit studio and incubator, TMC offers a range of facilities for reservation, including three professional recording studios, a rehearsal space, and a dedicated DJ studio available to the public at subsidized hourly rates. In 2025, TMC supported 441 artists through more than 1,200 studio bookings, including recording sessions, rehearsals, DJ practice, and creative production.
Beyond studio access, TMC also produces original multimedia content designed to help artists build portfolios and expand visibility. Its live production series Beach Break Sessions features full-band performances recorded live in studio, while Audio Espresso showcases live DJ sets. Since launching, TMC has produced more than 100 live sessions featuring both emerging and established artists across genres, all recorded live without overdubs.?
As nonprofit creative infrastructure becomes increasingly important in high-cost cities, TMC’s model is designed to help local artists remain active, visible, and professionally connected within San Diego’s music economy.
