Just in Time for Foster Youth & Woodward Contemporary Join Forces for a Cause
Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) and Woodward Contemporary are teaming up this fall to showcase the power of art to heal and inspire. Through a series of painting workshops led by Woodward Contemporary’s studio artist volunteers, transition-age foster youth have explored self-expression, emotional wellness, and storytelling through visual art. Their works will be displayed alongside Woodward Contemporary’s juried exhibition of local artists in Palette of Possibilities, with an opening reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, October 11. The show will be on view October 11 through November 8 at Woodward Contemporary (3935 Harney Street, San Diego) in Old Town.
Foster youth are two to four times more likely than their peers to experience mental health challenges, often due to the instability and trauma inherent in the foster care system. This collaboration recognizes mental wellness as a fundamental right and offers a platform for young adults to build confidence, process experiences, and connect with their community through art. Research shows that engaging with art, whether by creating it or simply viewing it, can significantly reduce stress and boost mood. In structured art therapy settings, many participants experience meaningful reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms, often seeing benefits within just a few sessions. For foster youth, art becomes more than a creative outlet—it’s a lifeline for self-expression and healing.
“Art, in its many forms, is a powerful healer,” said Irving Chavez, JIT’s chief impact officer. “There’s no rulebook for sharing your wisdom—art lets your creativity and individuality shine. Through art, we bridge gaps, touch hearts, and remind each other that we’re never truly alone in this journey.”
The opening reception, held Saturday, October 11 is free and open to the public. Art lovers can expect a wide range of styles and price points, making the experience accessible to all. The exhibition will be open during regular gallery hours, Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Proceeds will go directly to the artists.
