The Busalacchi Family Brings Food, Culture and Character to Little Italy

| July 7, 2026 | 0 Comments

This July marks a major milestone for one of Little Italy San Diego’s most recognizable dining destinations. Barbusa, located at 1917 India Street, celebrates its 10-year anniversary with a menu that is plentiful with an amazing variety of meats, fish, shellfish, vegetables and pastas. From lamb chops to halibut, and mussels to grilled eggplant, from spaghetti to pizza, there is something for all discriminating tastes and appetites.

Since opening in 2016, the restaurant has become a defining part of the neighborhood’s modern culinary identity, known for its high-energy atmosphere, Sicilian-inspired dishes, house-made pastas, and commitment to the family-centered hospitality that has long defined the Busalacchi name. A decade later, it remains one of the most in-demand reservations in Little Italy, continuing to play a role in defining the neighborhood’s national reputation as a dining destination.

Over four decades, the family has expanded its footprint along Little Italy, building a collection of concepts that have grown alongside the neighborhood itself, including Barbusa, Nonna, Lala and Cafe Zucherro. Each restaurant reflects a different expression of the family’s culinary heritage while reinforcing their long-standing presence in the community.

As attention continues to grow around Little Italy San Diego, Barbusa’s 10-year anniversary offers a timely moment to reflect on its impact in the neighborhood and its place as a staple in San Diego’s culinary scene – not to mention a favorite of many local celebrities.

None of this would be possible without the talent behind these establishments, including Peter “PJ” Busalacchi, general manager of Barbusa, or Nino Zizzo, executive chef.  Never to forget, the influential faces and characters of Little Italy are Joe and Lisa Busalacchi, who had been known for many years to grace the entrances greeting guests at their establishments when Little Italy was becoming what it is today.
