April Is Filled with Events
By Jamaal Jackson, President, Mission Hills BID and Assistant Vice President | Branch Manager US Bank Mission Hills
April, is the time of March Madness when bracket devotees, watch party goers and cultural lifestyle viewers go wild for basketball. If you know me, you know I am an enthusiastic basketball fan. I play in a men’s league and have even had dreams of tossing hoops alongside professional players. March Madness, with the 68-team bracket announcement on March 15, and Sweet 16 and Elite Eight in late March brought audiences together. The Final Four takes place on Saturday, April 4. The national title game will be played on Monday, April 6. Remember, in Mission Hills we have plenty of screens, seats and refreshment awaiting you.
Observing Passover? Passover begins at sundown on Wednesday, April 1, and continues through nightfall on Thursday, April 9. This Jewish holiday is internationally celebrated. If you are a Seder host, please remember preparations are readily available in Mission Hills at Pavilions and Lazy Acres.
Celebrating Easter? Sunday, April 5, is Easter. If your plans include a meal at a restaurant with family and friends, remember to make a reservation. Mission Hills is filled with excellent choices. For those hosting the Easter gathering at home, meal provisions are bountiful locally at Pavilions and Lazy Acres.
Curated collections of hard to find and popular offerings of wines and spirits are available at Falcon Liquor, Hills Wine & Spirits, Ibis Market, and Mission Hills Liquor for those wishing to add a special beverage to their holiday event.
National Pet Day on Saturday, April 11, first launched in 2006 by Colleen Paige, to raise awareness of the millions of pets in need of homes. In Mission Hills, Besties and Howlistic are ready to provide your four-legged family member with food, grooming, toys, treats, and bedding options. At US Bank Mission Hills, we appreciate customers who are regularly accompanied by their four-legged family members, so we always have dog treats on-hand. On a walk with your pup? Please stop by.
Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970. Since then, people from all backgrounds and generations have stood together to show their love for planet Earth. This year, San Diego EarthFest will take place on Saturday, April 25. The fair will feature over 100 eco-friendly exhibitors, live entertainment, and activities for kids. Shouldn’t we celebrate Earth Day every day?
Our executive director Susan McNeil Schreyer will be retiring on May 15, 2026, the twelve-year anniversary of her service to the Mission Hills Business Improvement District. As the board of directors prepares to say our goodbyes, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for her leadership. Susan has not only helped our small business community professionally; she has also inspired us personally. We truly appreciate the opportunities she provided and the trust she placed in each of us. While executing complex community projects, Susan’s experience, dedication and even-handed guidance elevated our BID. Her shared vision for our neighborhood of 500 small businesses established a solid foundation for future success. We know that Susan’s love and patronage of Mission Hills happened long before she took on this role and we look forward to welcoming her back to our local shops and happy hours in her new role as retiree.
