Beloved Businesses, Gorgeous Gardens, Magnificent Moms
by Jamaal Jackson, President, Mission Hills BID and US BANK Mission Hills Branch Manager
The anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire during the Battle at Puebla in 1862 will be celebrated throughout Mission Hills. This day is well-known as Cinco de Mayo and is synonymous with the celebration of Mexican-American culture and a refreshing beverage named Margarita. I think anything edible goes well with a Margarita. Do you?
The month of May in Mission Hills is also about the Mission Hills Garden Walk. Since 1999 the Mission Hills Garden Club has hosted an annual Garden Walk that begins at our own Mission Hills Nursery, created by Kate Sessions the “Mother of Balboa Park.” This year’s garden walk is appropriately titled “Another Day in Paradise” and will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tickets are only available online and may be purchased at https://www.missionhillsgardenclub.org/Garden-Walk.
Join friends, family and visitors for an enjoyable day walking through beautiful Mission Hills and visiting private gardens selected to be family friendly, informative, and beautiful. An addition to this year’s walk will be musicians and artists in many of the gardens.
It is great to see many longtime and new businesses in the neighborhood are supporting this year’s Mission Hills Garden Walk by serving as sponsors. Again this year, the Mission Hills BID is pleased to promote this destination event on social and as sponsor with an ad in the Garden Club Walk souvenir booklet too. While you are out and about enjoying the neighborhood’s gorgeous gardens, we encourage you to arrive early or stay a little longer to also enjoy our splendid shops and fantastic food.
And what better place to spend Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12 than in Mission Hills? When remembering the mother and mother figures in your life know that the perfect Mother’s Day gifts await you right in the neighborhood. From flowers to pampering to a unique specialty item, or a delicious meal for Mom at a local eatery, Mission Hills is filled with gifting opportunities. Make it easy to celebrate while supporting your favorite Mission Hills businesses. Placing your orders in plenty of time and making an advance reservation for a meal are highly recommended.
To Susan McNeil Schreyer, executive director of the Mission Hills BID, whose work anniversary is on May 15, thank you for being an example of commitment and perseverance and for your invaluable contributions to the success of our BID. You keep crushing it regardless of the challenge and inspire us all in the process. Congratulations, on your 10-year work anniversary with the BID.
On May 16, look up to enjoy the installation of 70 new banners flying on lamp posts throughout our neighborhood, thanks to the partnership between the Mission Hills BID and the San Diego County Fair. Each banner features a Mission Hills business owners, their family members or staff. We have been told that “if any extras are printed they will also be installed at the Fair.” If you see your favorite business owners on one of these banners, be sure to let them know.
The BID continues to work with business owners and the City of San Diego to address homelessness issues that create a big burden on our Mission Hills small businesses. The San Diego Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) is usually responsive. You can help by reporting homeless individual and illegal encampment locations as soon as you see them 24/7 on Get It Done. This City of San Diego’s “Get It Done” app is at https://www.sandiego.gov/insidesd/how-use-citys-get-it-done-app and is easy to download onto your mobile device. Attaching photos and location descriptions are helpful. The City has shared with us that reports are monitored and cases are assigned throughout the day.
