Celebrating Biking, Gardens, Moms and More in May
Celebrating Biking, Gardens, Moms and More in May
By Jamaal Jackson, President, Mission Hills BID and US BANK Mission Hills Branch Manager
In early-May please look up and enjoy the installation of 70 new banners flying on lamp posts throughout our neighborhood, thanks to the partnership between the Mission Hills BID and the San Diego County Fair. Each banner features a Mission Hills business owner, their family members or staff. This year’s installation also includes representatives from the City and the County who help our neighborhood of businesses all year long. When you see a favorite person on one of these banners, please let them know where you saw their banner! This banner installation will continue through the first week of July.
And May is Bike Month. Biking as transportation, for recreation and for everyday life are encouraged. Several observances will take place to encourage bike ridership. If you own a bike, it is a great time to take it for a ride. You may register to participate in SANDAG Bike Anywhere Day on May 15 at SANDAG.org/bikeday.
The first celebration of Cinco de Mayo is believed to have occurred in California in 1863. Today it is celebrated in various parts of Mexico and the United States and is usually accompanied by music, a refreshing Margarita, and delicious food. This year the holiday falls on a Monday, so be sure to include Mission Hills in your plans as you honor this holiday throughout the weekend.
In Mission Hills, the month of May is synonymous with the Mission Hills Garden Walk. Since 1999 the Mission Hills Garden Club has hosted an annual Garden Walk that begins at our own Mission Hills Nursery, 1525 Fort Stockton Drive, where attendees pick up their wrist bands and booklets. This nursery has the distinction of being created by Kate Sessions the “Mother of Balboa Park.” There will also be a garden-oriented bazaar with garden related items for purchase. The mission of the Mission Hills Garden Club is “to educate, to engage, to beautify, and to give back.” This year’s garden walk is titled “A Garden Walk Through Time” and will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 10. Tickets are available online and may be purchased at https://www.missionhillsgardenclub.org. The funds raised will be used to continue the club’s Community College Scholarship Program, support Mission Hills Summer Concerts in the Park and help fund neighborhood beautification projects. Local musicians and artists will be in the gardens to add to the festivities. We are especially thankful to the Mission Hills homeowners who open their gardens for everyone to enjoy.
Again this year, the Mission Hills BID is pleased to promote this destination event on social and as sponsor with an ad in the Garden Club Walk souvenir booklet too. While you are out and about enjoying the neighborhood’s gorgeous gardens, we encourage you to arrive early or stay a little longer to also enjoy our splendid shops and fantastic food. It is great to see many longtime and new businesses in the neighborhood supporting this year’s Mission Hills Garden Walk by serving as sponsors.
And what better place to spend Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11 than in Mission Hills? The mother figures in your life will surely appreciate receiving a gift from Mission Hills’ bounty of gifting opportunities. Pampering mom might include beauty and relaxation, a unique specialty item, or a delicious meal at a local eatery. Your favorite Mission Hills businesses make it easy. If you can’t decide, buy them all. Appointments, pre- ordering and reserving in plenty of time are highly recommended.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday honoring those in the US Military who died in service to our country. Locally, this weekend marks the unofficial beginning of the summer season. On Monday, May 26 as we gather with family and friends in remembrance, traditionally we do so over a day of food and beverage. Provisions are plentiful throughout Mission Hills.
The BID continues to work with business owners and the City of San Diego to address issues which create a burden on our Mission Hills small businesses. You can help by reporting homeless individual, illegal encampment locations, graffiti, abandoned vehicles online as soon as you see them 24/7 on Get It Done. This City of San Diego’s “Get It Done” app is at https://www.sandiego.gov/insidesd/how-use-citys-get-it-done-app and is easy to download onto your mobile device. Attaching photos and location descriptions are helpful. The City has shared with us that reports are monitored and cases are assigned throughout the day.
