Make Mission Hills Your March Destination

This month, we change the clocks for spring. Each year, daylight saving time falls on the second Sunday of March. Clocks “spring forward,” meaning people and pets lose an hour of sleep. Sunrise and sunset will be about an hour later than the day before, and our evenings will have more light.  From sun up to sun down make Mission Hills your March destination.

This month, your support of Mission Hills woman owned businesses is especially appreciated. Women’s History Month 2026 will take place starting on Sunday, March 1 through Tuesday, March 31. The 2026 theme celebrates “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.”  In Mission Hills, approximately fifty percent of business license holders are women.  Since 1987, throughout the United States we have celebrated women’s contributions during the month of March.

Like college men’s basketball? Starting with the First Four, March Madness gets going on Tuesday, March 17, followed by first round: March 19-20, second round: March 21-22, Sweet 16: March 26-27, Elite Eight: March 28-29, and looking at the April for Final Four: Saturday, April 4 and the National championship game on Monday, April 6.  We have plenty of screens, seats and refreshments awaiting you in Mission Hills.

Saint Patrick’s Day on Tuesday the 17th is another opportunity to enjoy Mission Hills establishments.  Revelers are invited to check out specials at our Mission Hills restaurants and bars.  Please include our neighborhood in your plans.

On Wednesday, March 18, from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., the BID’s almost-Spring Mixer will take place at US BANK, 610 West Washington Street.  Mixers provide a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and network with other business owners, residents, and visitors.  At this mixer we will celebrate the Grand Re-Opening of US BANK Mission Hills and welcome new customers from Hillcrest.   If you’d like to attend, please RSVP to MissionHillsBID@gmail.com.

As we go to press, I just emceed the Mission Hills BID’s Colors on Canvas 2026 children’s hand painted banner contest Awards Celebration.  For me, the best part of the Awards Celebration was how proud each child was of themself and for each other!  Yep, I’m a proud dad to a seven year old son.  The Library Shop Mission Hills was an ideal gathering site for business owners, children and their families.  Thank you, Scott Ehrig-Burgess and staff, for the above and beyond hosting partnership.

This year’s Colors on Canvas contest produced thirty-one Grant TK8 student banners winning first, second and third place prizes based on 5,600 scores from a panel of fifteen judges.  From September through December students at Grant TK-8 School hand painted 70 colorful banners featuring a Mission Hills business.  I want to thank Grant TK-8 School and most especially Sarah Ekedal, the school’s art coordinator, for overseeing and inspiring the children. To angel donor The Grant School Foundation, thank you for funding Pizza e Birra, Cake Bakery and artist Becca Dwyer.  Thank you to my Mission Hills BID board colleagues who stepped-up and filled-in at everyplace they were needed. To Susan McNeil Schreyer, the BID’s executive director, thank you for spearheading the Colors on Canvas 2026 project from concept to conclusion.  And, to the County of San Diego, and most especially Supervisor Monica Montgomery  Steppe,  thank you for championing major funding for this community building project. It takes a village.

The Colors on Canvas hand painted banners were installed in late-December and will remain installed on Mission Hills lampposts through late- March. If you wish to have a banner delivered to you for a small delivery fee, contact MissionHillsBID@gmail.com.  To enjoy photos from the Awards Celebration event visit missionhillsbid.com and/or @missionhillssd on Instagram.

Mission Hills BID is always looking for people who want to become more involved in making Mission Hills an exciting place throughout the year.  If you love Mission Hills and have volunteer time, please contact us at MissionHillsBID@gmail.com  for more information.

Grant TK8 School second grader, Maeve Curran, whose hand painted banner featured Heartwork Coffee gets recognized during the event.
