Making March Meaningful

There is a lot happening in Mission Hills this month.

Women’s History Month celebrates women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Women’s History Month 2025 will take place from Saturday, March 1 through Monday, March 31, 2025. The 2025 theme celebrates “Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.”

In Mission Hills, approximately fifty percent of business license holders are by woman owned businesses.  The Mission Hills BID will celebrate the role of woman owned businesses with a Progressive Mixer on Wednesday, March 19, beginning and ending at Salone Sloane, located at 1605 West Lewis Street in Mission Hills.  A Mixer is an opportunity to meet your neighbors and network with other business owners, residents, and visitors.  On March 19, the Mixer will begin at 5:30 p.m., includes food and beverage and a robust raffle, and conclude at 7 p.m. As we go to press, we have invited business owners to be hosts and take part in the evening.

I want to thank Grant TK-8 School and most especially Sarah Ekedal, their Artist- in- Residence, for overseeing and inspiring the hand painting of banners by school children, grades TK through eighth grade, as a part of the Mission Hills BID hosted 2025 Colors on Canvas banner art contest. Each of the 70 banners featured a Mission Hills business.  Ms. Ekedal continues to instill a love for art into the lives of students.  Banner art was created at Grant School between September and December 2024 and installed on lamp posts throughout Mission Hills in late-December.  The instillation will remain through March 2025.  I encourage you to look up and enjoy the art as you walk or drive around Mission Hills and note the tags below each winning banner.

On February 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., an Awards Reception and Celebration took place at the Mission Hills Library in honor of the Grant School student banner art artists.  Thirty one student artists received first, second and third prizes based on 4,900 scores from a panel of fourteen judges.  More than 170 students, parents, educators and members of the Mission Hills business community attended. Speaking of celebrating art and artists, Art Gallery Month in San Diego is celebrating its launch with artist talks, demonstrations and exhibits on Saturday, March 15. In Mission Hills we have SD Art Advisory owned by artist Alexander Salazar at 3977 Falcon Street.  His gallery serves as an artists’ showcase and a connecting point for art collectors.  At SD Art Advisory working artists will also be featured in a special series entitled Artist in the Window.  Times are challenging as gallery owners work to keep their doors open to the public.  At SD Art Advisory you will receive a warm welcome and learn about each piece of art and its creator.  Your canine family members are also welcome.  For more information visit sdartadvisory.com and @sdadvisory on Instagram.

And Saint Patrick’s Day is another opportunity to support Mission Hills establishments on Monday, March 17.  Experience tells me the prior weekend will be filled with revelers and lots of specials at our Mission Hills restaurants and bars.  I hope to see you out and about enjoying the weekend.

The arrival of spring on March 20 marks a time for new possibilities.  As you consider what might be personally meaningful and have a greater positive impact, please know the Mission Hills BID is a looking for people who want to become more involved in making Mission Hills an exciting place throughout the year. Please contact us at MissionHillsBID@gmail.com  for more information.
