USD Announces First Graduating Class of Master’s Degree in Applied Data Science

In 2020, University of San Diego (USD) launched its fully online Master of Science in Applied Data Sciences (MS-ADS) program. The academic institution celebrated the first graduating class of the program on Saturday, May 28 at Torero Stadium with a total of 22 students from across the country donning their caps and gowns. Given the program is 100 percent virtual, many had never met before, as one would in a traditional classroom, making it even more of a special graduation day for this inaugural class. 

USD’s Master of Science in Applied Data Science is ranked among the top 10 universities to apply for a master’s in data science degree by Analytics Insight.The program also ranks 33rd on themost affordable online master’s in data science programs by The Best Colleges Online. Another home run for the program’s successful launch was their early focus on community outreach through a free virtual workshop series offered in partnership with the San Diego Tech Hub.

ZDNet reports data from LinkedIn shows a three-year hiring growth of 37 percent for data scientist jobs, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median salaries for data scientists of $126,830.

The new Applied Data Science master’s degree offered through USD’s Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering develops a student’s foundational knowledge and real-world technical data science skills, preparing and positioning them to thrive in this highly in-demand field. With a class format that is 100 percent online, the program targets working professionals who want to earn their MS-ADS while balancing the demands of work and family life.
