2012 Science Olympiad
Grant K-8 School has started its 2nd year with the Science Olympiad, nationally organized around an annual, single day competition. This year’s Olympiad will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012. Each student, competing in pairs, is eligible to prepare in up to 4 of 23 events covering all areas of science: biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. Some events are written tests and some are building activities for devices or objects to satisfy specific criteria and/or perform prescribed tasks. Some focus activities on process and problem solving. Many rely upon use of technology and innovative design. Visit Science Olympiad’s national website (soinc.org) for event descriptions.
Grant K-8 School is seeking to expand its group of fine volunteer coaches for 5th-8th graders to participate in all events. Coaches and students prepare and practice one to two hours per week leading up to the Olympiad. Currently, coaches are needed for Awesome Aquifer, Disease Detectives, Road Scholar, Water Quality and Write It – Do It.
