Eat. Drink. Read. A Culinary Event for Literacy

The San Diego Council on Literacy (SDCOL) has challenged over a dozen of San Diego’s finest Chefs to prepare a gourmet dishes inspired by a favorite book.  The results of their imagination will be served to those who attend the third annual Eat. Drink. Read – A Culinary Event for Literacy event from 5:30 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 16 at The McMillan Center, Liberty Station.

Complementing the gourmet array of savories and sweets, beverages will be flowing thanks to Stone Brewing Company, 12 Signs Wine, Honest Tea, Solar Rain, SOL Market, Craft & Commerce mixologists, Eric Johnson & Christian Siglin, and DiningOutSD.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck; Amaya at The Grand Del Mar;Chef Camron Woods

Frida’s Fiestas: Recipes and Reminiscences of Life with Frida Kahlo by Colle & Rivera; Casa Guadalajara; Chef Jose Duran

Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins; The Marine Room; Chef Ron Oliver

The Odyssey by Homer; Red Door; Chef Miguel Valdez

 

SDCOL Executive Director, Jose Cruz, says, “San Diego County is home to 440,000 adults who read below the 5th grade level. Most of these are native English speakers.  Parents who lack basic literacy skills are least likely to read to their children, have books in the home for their children to read, and, overall, are under-equipped to support the success of their children in school.
