St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will be hosting its first-ever “Toast for the Roses,” a Kentucky Derby celebration and watch party. It will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, May 3 at the Guild Hotel (500 W Broadway in downtown San Diego, CA 92101).

A stylish celebration of the most thrilling two minutes in sports, SMSC is bringing the spirit of Churchill Downs right to San Diego with a live watch party, handcrafted cocktails, delectables bites, live music, photo opportunities and more. Whether you’re a racing fan or looking to enjoy the derby atmosphere, this event promises an evening of flavor, and fun downtown.

Guests are encouraged to don their biggest hats and brightest bow ties for a complete Derby Day look. As the race is known for its bold fashion and headwear, those who are dressed to the nines have a chance to win fashion contests. The best-dressed guests will take home fabulous prizes.

This unforgettable afternoon will raise funds for Sophie’s Organic Garden and the Aquatic Center at SMSC. Through its innovative programs, SMSC gives students a chance to develop creative outlets, learn marketable skills, and gain a sense of independence and self-esteem. The aquatics program offers year-round swimming classes and a social experience with a broad spectrum of health benefits. The organic garden serves as a reality-based work training environment, with students learning horticulture and customer services skills to improve their daily lives and branch out as important contributors to the greater community. Over 400 students attend SMSC, ranging from young adults to seniors in their eighties.
