Worth Calendaring in April
Jamaal Jackson, President, Mission Hills BID and Assistant Vice President | Branch Manager US Bank Mission Hills
Whether you find hoaxes and pranks to be hilarious or rude, we all have a tale about “April Fools!” being shouted on the first of April. There is ambiguity about its origin though some say in 1392 Chaucer mentioned this day in The Canterbury Tales. Throughout eastern and western Europe and most English language speaking countries outside of Europe, and in North and South America, this day of trickery is celebrated with jokes, festivals, and even dressing a city monument in funny clothes. Media has been known to get involved, adding a level of credibility. What will you be doing to create or avoid being pranked?
National Pet Day provides an opportunity to honor the unconditional love from our pets and encourage pet adoption each April 11. We all know the bond between people and their pets provides numerous health benefits, including lower blood pressure, lower anxiety and more opportunities to exercise, socialize and maintain cognitive function. According to recent information from the US Census Bureau, 49 million households share their space with at least one dog and 28 million households have a cat or cats. In Mission Hills, Barkhouse, Besties and Howlistic are ready to provide your four-legged family member with food, grooming, toys, treats, and bedding options. At US Bank Mission Hills, we appreciate customers who are regularly accompanied by their four-legged family so we always have dog treats on-hand. On a walk with your pup? Please stop by.
Observing Passover? Passover begins at sundown on April 12 and continues through nightfall on April 20. This Jewish holiday is internationally celebrated and the dates for Passover vary from year to year. If you are a Seder host, please remember preparations are available in Mission Hills at Vons and Lazy Acres.
Celebrating Easter? Sunday, April 20, is Easter. If your plans include brunch at a restaurant with family and friends, reservations are advised. And Mission Hills is filled with excellent choices. For those hosting the Easter gathering at home, meal provisions are bountiful locally at Vons and Lazy Acres.
If your Passover Seder or Easter meal calls for wine and spirits, remember that Falcon Liquor, Hills Wine & Spirits, Ibis Market, and Mission Hills Liquor offer curated collections of hard to find and popular offerings. Vons and Lazy Acres have inventories worth checking out too. As always, we encourage you to enjoy your observances and celebrations in Mission Hills.
In San Diego, Earth Day will be celebrated on Saturday April 19. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, more than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day events each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. San Diego’s EarthFest is a family-friendly and dog-friendly event featuring speakers, panel discussions, yoga and wellness classes and activities for children. Plus, there will be animal rescue organizations with pets ready for adoption.
Two Earth friendly traditions continue in Mission Hills. Troy Curnett and the One Mission Realty team are hosting their free Annual Shredding Event on Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Hawk Street at Fort Stockton Drive. Gather those papers you have been wanting to safely discard and watch them being shredded. For more information, visit OneMissionRealty.com/shred. Maureen and Antoinette at COMPASS will celebrate the twenty-sixth-year of the Mission Hills Community Garage Sale on Saturday, April 26 starting at 8 a.m. So far, there are 60 household participants. If you want to host a garage sale, stop in at 1621 West Washington for a sign-up card. If you are a buyer, stop by the morning of April 26 to pick up your guide to the seller locations and list of what each is featuring for sale.
